If you’ve ever eaten at Red Lobster, you’ve enjoyed their amazing Cheddar Bay Biscuits. They’re golden brown on the outside and light and flaky inside, with pops of cheddar cheese and a hint of garlic. Nothing says “dinner’s ready!” like the smell of homemade biscuits, and these are so easy to make from scratch–without using a mix, or even Bisquick.

There are lots of ways you can serve your copycat Cheddar Bay Biscuits. Make them full size to go along with dinner, or for delicious breakfast sandwiches. I like to dip them in Instant Pot Beef & Onion Soup. Make them tiny sized for party appetizers, or wrap them around hot dogs for delicious, cheesey hot dog buns.

Cheddar Bay Biscuits are made with only a few ingredients–flour, salt, baking powder, cheddar cheese, butter, and garlic salt. You probably have all of these ingredients already, and it only takes a minute or two to mix them all together. You don’t even have to roll them out. Just spoon them onto a cookie sheet and bake!

Biscuit Making Tips & Troubleshooting

Here are some tips for ensuring your Cheddar Bay Biscuits are just as good (or better) than the ones at Red Lobster.

  • Carefully measure your dry ingredients, and ensure your baking powder is fresh. There’s no yeast in these biscuits, so they won’t rise if the baking powder is old.
  • Mix the ingredients together gently with a spoon or dough whisk. This is not a recipe that will benefit from using your stand mixer–overworking the dough will make the biscuits tough.
  • These biscuits won’t spread much while cooking, so you can put them pretty close together on the cookie sheet. Two fingers apart is a good distance.
  • If your biscuits are burning on the bottom, the cookie sheet may be too close to the heating element. Move your biscuits to a higher rack, and/or place another cookie sheet under the first one to insulate it a bit.
  • Don’t skip the final step of brushing the tops with melted butter and garlic salt! This is the secret to making them taste just like Red Lobster biscuits.

Notes

Here are some tips for ensuring your Cheddar Bay Biscuits are just as good (or better) than the ones at Red Lobster.

  • Carefully measure your dry ingredients, and ensure your baking powder is fresh. There’s no yeast in these biscuits, so they won’t rise if the baking powder is old.
  • Mix the ingredients together gently with a spoon or dough hook. This is not a recipe that will benefit from using your stand mixer--overworking the dough will make the biscuits tough.

  1. Excellent…..been trying and looking for this hack for a long time. This is the best recipe for them I’ve found. And easy. I used sour milk because I save it for baking when it’s over the limit for drinking. We called it clabbered milk where I grew up in East TN.

    Thank you!!!!

  2. Deliciousness !! Great stand in for staying at home. Will never by bisquick to make again. This will be my go to!
